Online Poker Pot Odds in Plain Language

A simple explanation of call size, final pot, estimated chance and why variance still matters.

Pot odds compare the price of a call with the pot that could be won. They support a decision; they do not guarantee a winning hand.

A simple ratio

If calling ₦1,000 creates a ₦5,000 final pot, the call is one-fifth of the final pot. A player then compares that percentage with a realistic estimate of winning or improving.

What the simple ratio misses

Future bets, opponent ranges, rake and the possibility of improving to a losing hand can change the decision.

Variance

A mathematically reasonable call can lose repeatedly in the short term. Do not raise table limits to recover losses.
